Hunt For White October

It’s odd how the idea of human drug mules has become so common place that condoms stuck up a guy’s (or girl’s) asshole have become plot points in sitcoms, movies, and cartoons, well at least the ones on Adult Swim. But it’s always amazing when you realize just how big and broad these dealers are trying to go, so I welcome to you to their version of the Costco: shipping tons of cocaine via submarine. It’s actually rather sad to think there’s actually legit nations out there without a Navy to speak of but meanwhile Escobar’s grand kids have the gumption to start up their own deep sea operations. Looking at this thing though you have to give them a lot of credit, it looks like someone welded a bunch of trashcans together and attached an outboard motor to the thing. If you’re the captain of this thing and you make it back alive without drowning on drug-infused sea water, good for you, you deserve a $5 million dollar payday.
Colombian drug dealers sick of getting busted by law enforcement have come up with numerous ways to transport their contraband to foreign shores. They used automobiles with secret compartments, human drug “mules,” high-speed aircraft and boats. Now, they’re trying their luck with submarines.
One of these special drug subs was caught 175 miles off the coast of Guatemala carrying more than 10 tons of cocaine, the BBC reports. This is the largest drug booty Guatemalan officials have ever seized.
After Colombian authorities tipped off the DEA and Guatemalan law enforcement, ships were ordered to intercept. Their mission then became “The Hunt For White October.”
Three Colombians and one Mexican national on board were arrested.
U.S. officials estimate these drug submarines carry one-third of all cocaine traveling from South America to the U.S. The subs are usually made of steel, fiberglass and wood to make them harder to detect by radar.
