Music Report: Kings Of Leon @ Patriot Center

The Kings Of Leon have been really big for a while in Australia of all places, but are just now blowing up in the States, deservedly so because they are awesome. Here’s the details on the April 24th, 2009 show in Fairfax, VA.
The Walkmen -- “On The Water” and a few other Walkmen songs have been all over Sirius XM recently, and for good reason, this band is quality. With definitive rock roots they sound a little something like Radiohead, Pixies, or possibly neither, as they go out of their way to identify with any influences. With most of the band members having local roots after attending St. Albans private school, it was sort of a homecoming for them, although you wouldn’t know it as they stuck to their setlist and didn’t veer off too much with any chatter, but with everyone at the Patriot Center milling about and more worried about beers and hot dogs and the main act, you can’t blame them.

Kings Of Leon -- This band has quite literally exploded lately, with single after single becoming hit after hit, both on satellite, terrestrial, MTV, internet, and beyond. The three Followill brothers and one cousin have managed to hit the perfect niche of semi-ballads (Use Somebody) to semi-rockouts (Sex On Fire) and everything else between as their big breakout album “Only By The Night” is filled with. The show was fantastic and they even managed to avoid the forced encore every band seems to do and just sort of killed the lights for a bit and then just came back on playing. Chanting “we want more!!!” for five minutes gets old. In all great band, great show, and for sure are the short list of acts to see again.

A smash of a show, with the up and coming Walkmen and the already here and now Kings of Leon, the show was spot on with the hits you need to sell a show and the deep track stuff that makes you want to stay. Patriot Center is always a packed house being on a college campus, but this show seemed even more packed-er-er if such a thing is possible.
